Norovirus bug at George Eliot Hospital over

Bosses at George Eliot Hospital in Nuneaton have finally lifted visiting restrictions after the second norovirus outbreak there in as many months.

The winter sickness bug has affected wards on and off over the last two months, with the site being completely closed off to visitors and new admissions twice in that period.

Up until Monday, family and friends had been restricted to going onto wards between 7 and 8pm, with only two people visiting a patient at a time, but now all restrictions have ended.

However, nurses are warning anyone who thinks they might be suffering from sickness or diarrhoea to still stay away in order to keep norovirus at bay.

Dawn Wardell, Acting Director of Nursing at George Eliot, said: "If you are going to visit, and you feel nauseous, you're vomiting or anything of that nature, please do not come to the hospital."

"You have a risk of giving it to your relative and other patients."

NHS Warwickshire are encouraging adults with suspected norovirus to call their Diarrhoea Hotline - 0300 130 3050 - with their symptoms rather than going to their GP or A+E.

Parents worried about children should call NHS Direct instead on 0845 46 47.

Tips if you're suffering from diarrhoea and/or vomiting:

- Ring the hotline immediately for advice.
- Start taking on small amounts of fluids at regular intervals such as water, milk, soup, a soft drink or tea.
- Use rehydration sachets which are available from your local chemist.
