About

Tom joined Mercia in 2019 as an Investment Associate within the NPIF team, focusing on early and growth-stage businesses located throughout Yorkshire, the Humber and Tees Valley. Tom is involved in all aspects of the deal cycle from origination, analysis and execution through to his board roles at a number of portfolio companies.

 

Previous experience

Prior to Mercia, Tom completed an internship at PwC working with the tax team on a range of corporate and private equity transactions. Tom graduated with a BSc in Economics from the University of Warwick in 2019.

Val joined Finance South Yorkshire (now part of the Group) in 2010 as an Investment Administrator within the business loans team based in Yorkshire. She has over 10 years’ experience in fund administration. Val is responsible for administering the day-to-day workload pertaining to pre and post-investment activity, gathering of economic outputs to collate into monthly and quarterly reports, and the diary management and coordination of communication within the NPIF – Mercia Debt Team, which covers Yorkshire and the Humber.

Previous experience

Val spent three years working for YFM Group on its Partnership Investment Finance campaign, where she was responsible for all administrative and PA support and production of analytical reports, as well as managing a small office and subsequent close down procedures of the satellite office at the end of the fund. Her previous background was mainly in line management and administrative support for the retail sector, where training and development was a large part of the role.

Will joined the Mercia in 2011, and has over 16 years’ experience in venture capital. He is Managing Director, Regional Venture Funds heading up the team that provides support for entrepreneurs to build high-growth innovative companies. These funds provide risk capital for new and early-stage startups, both tech and non-tech, together with scale-up capital for ambitious, established growth businesses located throughout the regions.

Will is also responsible for investments in Intechnica and Azzure IT.

Previous experience

Will was previously a director with 3i, based in Manchester, with responsibility for a £500.0m portfolio of investments across the UK. The earlier part of his career was spent with Ernst & Young as a member of its corporate finance team in the north of England. Will has been working with regionally-based growth and venture capital-backed companies since 1989, and in that time has been involved in more than 150 transactions.

Will joined Mercia in 2018 as an Investment Manager. As part of our Yorkshire-based equity team, he’s primarily focused on the origination and execution of deals for the Northern Powerhouse Investment Fund, in particular the provision of growth capital to trading SMEs with ambitious and innovative management teams.

Will is also a member of the Mercia O2 Committee – offering the benefits of diverse opinions, ideas and points of view

Previous experience

Will spent more than six years in corporate finance as an M&A specialist with KPMG in Leeds and The McLean Group in Washington DC. Whilst in the US he was typically working with tech-focused, mid-market companies delivering solutions to public sector customers, namely in aerospace, defence and government services, and healthcare. In his last year at KPMG, Will was seconded to NorthInvest, where he developed an angel investor network and support ecosystem for tech startups across the North of England. Prior to his corporate finance career, Will was a researcher at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), a bipartisan policy thinktank in Washington DC.

Jonathan joined Finance South Yorkshire (now part of the Group) in 2010 as an Investment Manager within the business loans team based in Yorkshire, and has over 30 years’ experience in lending. He now has the role of Senior Investment Manager mainly focused on West and North Yorkshire for NPIF – Mercia Debt Finance.

Previous experience

He previously spent four years at YFM Group working on the Partnership Investment Finance Loan Fund in a similar role. His earlier roles have included investment manager with Brown Shipley, a London-based Merchant Bank providing lending solutions to high net worth clients, and also Leeds Building Society dealing with commercial property investment. Prior to those roles he spent 14 years with NatWest Bank plc where he was a relationship manager.

Biography

Julian joined Mercia through the 2016 acquisition of Enterprise Ventures, which he joined in 2004 and was head of technology investments at the time of its acquisition. He has over 20 years of venture capital experience, including the successful listings of companies such as Blue Prism Group plc and OptiBiotix Health plc. Through the subsequent sell down of its holding in Blue Prism, Mercia’s RisingStars Growth Fund realised c£95m, 105x the cost of its investment. Julian leads the equity investment team as well as managing the pipeline of Mercia’s direct investments.

Alongside his wide experience of investing across many sectors,  Julian played a leading role in securing the managed funds contracts awarded by the British Business Bank and North East Fund Ltd and has been Mercia’s Chief Investment Officer since April 2018. Julian has a geology with chemistry degree from the University of Southampton and qualified as a chartered accountant with accountants Smith & Williamson. He is also responsible for investments in nDreams and Soccer Manager.

About

Maurice joined Mercia in 2017 and is an Investment Associate with the NPIF – Mercia Equity Team. Working across Yorkshire, Humber and Tees Valley, Maurice’s role includes sourcing and executing early-stage deals whilst also being responsible for reporting to our NPIF stakeholder, the British Business Bank.

Maurice is also a member of the Mercia Knowledge Committee.

Previous experience

Prior to joining Mercia, Maurice was responsible for all investment operations on the Finance Yorkshire Equity Linked Fund. He holds a BA (Hons) degree in Business Management and an MSc joint honour in Finance and Marketing, both from Manchester Metropolitan University.

Megan joined the Group in 2018 as an Investment Associate for the NPIF – Mercia Equity Team, which is focused on investing in businesses located throughout Yorkshire, Humber and the Tees Valley. Megan is based in our Leeds office, and provides research and deal origination support to the Investment Team.

Previous experience

Megan has a background in deal origination, having previously worked at Langcliffe Merger Connect, where she was a senior deal executive in their private equity team, specifically working with their European clients. Megan holds a BSc (Hons) degree in Biochemistry from the University of Leeds.

Melanie joined Finance South Yorkshire (now part of the Group) in 2006 and is part of the Finance Yorkshire Portfolio Team. She is a Portfolio Executive with responsibility for monitoring the performance and realisation of the business loans on the Finance Yorkshire fund mainly covering the South Yorkshire area. Melanie is also working with the NPIF – Mercia Debt Team to introduce referrals from her portfolio and other sources. She will ultimately be responsible for the monitoring and realisation of the investments made through this fund.

Previous experience

Melanie previously worked for UK Steel Enterprise for four years as an investment administrator on the South Yorkshire Investment Fund Small Business Fund. Here she put in place all the processes to help the smooth running of the fund management role. She also has experience in retail, corporate pensions, project management and purchase ledger roles.

Paul joined the Group in 2006 with more than 30 years’ experience in lending. He is the Managing Director, Mercia Debt Funds and heads up Mercia’s lending activity. Paul was heavily involved in the launch of both SME Loans Funds and is also Fund Manager for NPIF in Yorkshire and Humber and was also responsible for several successful exits including Core RFID and Finch Consulting.

Previous experience

Previously Paul was a regional director with Barclays Ventures and responsible for the north of England and the Midlands. He has made numerous equity investments in MBOs and development capital transactions in various sectors, including specialist manufacturing, support services and distribution. Paul also sat on the boards of many of these businesses and he continues to do this as part of his role within Mercia too. The earlier part of Paul’s career was spent in corporate banking, in the UK and overseas.
