Melanie joined the Group in 2011 as an Investment Executive providing support to EV SME Loans, the RisingStars Growth Funds, Coalfields Growth and the EV Growth Funds Investment Teams which are able to invest in businesses across the UK and in a variety of sectors. Based in Manchester, she is responsible for supporting portfolio management and as such takes responsibility for coordinating the investment process, monitoring portfolio companies during the Fund’s involvement, and also reporting to Fund investors.

Previous experience

Melanie has a background working within the finance and audit function, with a particular focus on governance and compliance. She has previously supported large Government contracts within the Welfare to Work Sector, ensuring the business operated within the parameters of the contracts it managed.

Nigel joined the Group in December 2019 as Portfolio Director. Nigel manages a portfolio of investments from a variety of Funds from across the Group including Warwick Acoustics and Eyoto.

Nigel is a member of the Mercia Responsible Investment Committee – a Group-wide team committed to delivering the ESG strategy across the business

Previous experience

Nigel has over 17 years’ experience in venture capital and private equity. He started his career at Deloitte advising investors, and prior to joining Mercia, was a partner at YFM Equity Partners where he worked originating and completing new investments, as well as managing acquisitions, realisations and fundraisings. He trained as an engineer, holds an MBA and has experience in investments in software, data, engineering, support services, telecoms, chemicals and technology companies.

Rosie joined the Group in 2017 and has responsibility for group-wide compliance, client assets, operational oversight and anti-money laundering and financial crime controls. She reports to the Chief Financial Officer and works closely with the Finance Directors across the varying divisions.

Previous experience

Rosie has a background in FCA regulation and compliance, having joined the regulator following graduation from Sheffield where she studied Law. Rosie worked for the regulator for 10 years, followed by a period in consultancy, working with a range of regulated firms, including private equity and venture capital firms. She then spent five years as head of compliance at AJ Bell, before undertaking a couple of roles in specialist client assets compliance, most recently for Lloyds Banking Group.

Wayne joined Mercia in 2006 and is the Managing Director of Mercia PE Funds where he is responsible for originating and investing into high-growth SMEs across the UK. He also manages a portfolio of companies from the PE Funds spanning sectors from manufacturing to online retail including Woodall Nicholson and Total Resources.

Previous experience

Previously, Wayne was an investment director with Aberdeen Asset Managers Private Equity, investing in a broad range of sectors across the north of England. Prior to that, he was in the corporate finance teams at both Ernst & Young and BDO where he advised companies, management teams and investors on a wide range of mid-market transactions. A Chartered Accountant, Wayne has spent the last 20 years of his career advising and investing into SMEs and larger corporates.

Formerly CEO of Enterprise Ventures ahead of its acquisition by Mercia. Jonathan has led and managed a substantial portfolio of successful private equity and venture capital investments. A significant proportion of this portfolio lies in the less affluent regions of the UK, where success has been achieved not only through the generation of attractive financial returns, but also through the jobs that have been created in growing SMEs, making a sustainable and long-term contribution to the UK economy.

Previous experience

Jonathan studied Law at Oxford University and has an MA in Jurisprudence. He spent 12 years in practice as a solicitor in the public and private sectors and the last 28 years as a fund manager with Murray Johnstone, Aberdeen Asset Management and Enterprise Ventures. In that time he raised more than £900.0million of private equity and venture capital funds worldwide, from institutional and Government sources, for investment in the UK. Jonathan was a member of the Council of the British Venture Capital Association (BVCA) and chaired the BVCA Legal & Technical Committee. He was chair of the Community Development Finance Association (CDFA, now Responsible Finance) from 2011 to 2015 and is a member of the North West Regional Council for the Confederation of British Industry (CBI).

Joining the Manchester office as Digital Content Manager under the guidance of Head of Marketing and Communications, Alison Dwyer, Lee manages Mercia’s digital and content strategy.

 Previous experience

Lee has vast experience and knowledge in content production and ideation. He began his career as an editor with Manchester’s Channel M TV station, before producing content around the globe for World Rugby; culminating in reporting at the 2011 World Cup in New Zealand. A move to Manchester City Football Club in 2011 saw Lee take on some of the club’s most ambitious and ground-breaking digital campaigns, initiatives and projects to date. A move down the M62 in 2018 to Liverpool Football Club saw his work being industry recognised when the Digital team won the ‘Best in Football Media’ award at the Football Business Awards in 2019.

Matthew joined the EV Growth Funds Investment Team in 2018 and is responsible for originating and transacting new investments and advising portfolio companies. He is based in the Manchester office and invests into high-growth SMEs across the UK in a range of sectors.

Matt is also a member of the Mercia O2 Committee – offering the benefits of diverse opinions, ideas and points of view.

Previous experience

Before joining the Group, Matthew spent the last seven years as an assistant director at BDO in the transaction services team based in Manchester, focused on providing due diligence services to mid-market private equity firms, across a range of sectors. Matthew is a Chartered Accountant and holds an Economics degree from the University of Sheffield.

Abbie joined the Group in 2017 and is the Fund Administrator for the NPIF YHTV Equity Fund and the North West Fund for Venture Capital. Abbie supports both teams with general administrative tasks including internal deal completion processes, gathering of economic outputs, and coordinating and preparing quarterly client reports. Abbie is based at Mercia’s office in Manchester.

Previous experience

Abbie has a strong background in administration and experience working in financial services, having worked in SIPP administration and providing support to independent financial advisers in preparing client investment review reports. Abbie holds a degree in English Language and Linguistics from the University of Sheffield.

Joining Mercia in August 2019, Alison heads up marketing and communications, responsible for charting the direction of the company; creating and leading the strategy behind Mercia’s communications and the evolution of its brand.

Alison is also a member of the Mercia Knowledge Committee.

Previous experience

Alison has lead marketing and communications teams both in-house and agency-side across multiple sectors and countries for several global brands. But her 20+ years’ experience has been best spent working with fast-growth businesses with audacious objectives and exceptional products and services. Focused on delivering the best internal and external communication outcomes across many categories including professional service, financial services, government and technology, Alison is as much commercial strategist as prolific story teller.

Angela joined Mercia in January 2019 as Head of Portfolio and Platform and was promoted to Managing Director, Mercia Investments in July 2020. In her current role, Angela is responsible for the Direct Investment portfolio and overseeing the value-add support which Mercia offers to its investee companies

Previous experience

Angela has over 20 years’ experience in venture capital and private equity. She started her investment career at NatWest Development Capital and has since worked at North West Equity Fund, Barclays Ventures and, immediately prior to joining Mercia, as a partner at YFM Equity Partners where she specialised in portfolio management including trade sales, secondary buyouts and fundraisings. She has held board positions at companies involved in the software, support services, manufacturing and communications sectors.
