Alex recently joined Mercia in 2022 and is an Investment Manager in Mercia’s PE funds where he is responsible for originating and transacting new investments into high-growth SMEs across the UK. He is based in the Manchester office.

Previous experience

Previously, Alex was a Manager in Grant Thornton’s M&A Corporate Finance team in Manchester, where he worked on a number of mid-market private equity, corporate and debt advisory transactions. He has experience across a number of sectors.

Alex is a Chartered Accountant, starting his career in Grant Thornton’s Audit team in the East Midlands.

He also has a BSc (Hons) in Financial Mathematics from the University of Nottingham.

Joining Mercia in February 2022, Mike is an Investment Director for EV SME Loans and has responsibility for sourcing, structuring and negotiating new investment opportunities.

Previous experience

Mike has over 25 years’ experience in corporate and commercial Banking the last 14 years being with Allied Irish Bank, with time spent in their London, Edinburgh and Manchester offices.
Most recently Mike was Head of AIB’s Manchester business centre having previously undertaken a variety of roles for the bank including leading business development and customer relationship management teams. Mike has operated across a wide range of sectors, supporting a diverse portfolio of SME’s, delivering flexible lending solutions to help support their business ambitions.

Jonny joined Mercia in 2021 and is responsible for sourcing, transacting, and managing investments across the UK within Mercia’s Direct Investment portfolio.

Previous experience

Jonny joined Mercia from Ardenton Capital, where he spent four years transacting new investments and providing portfolio support. Prior to this he spent three years within Grant Thornton’s Transaction Services team advising clients on acquisitions, re-financings, and IPOs. Jonny qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 2015 and holds a degree in Law and Accounting from The University of Leeds.

Joining Mercia in May 2021, Abbie-Lee supports the wider marketing team under the guidance of Head of Marketing and Communications, Alison Dwyer and manages their Inbound Marketing strategy. Abbie-Lee is based at Mercia’s Manchester office.

Previous experience

Abbie-Lee has extensive knowledge of the Inbound methodology, helping to create a client-centric approach through a proven framework for multi-channel marketing. She began her career working in the technology sector, delivering pan-European marketing strategies for SaaS vendors and was recognised in 2019 on PCR’s 30 under 30 list as one of the industry’s most influential leaders.

Adam joined Mercia in 2021, following three years working at Rickitt Mitchell & Partners, advising UK businesses and private equity clients on strategic acquisitions and disposals. Having joined the VCT investment team in 2021 based in Manchester, he now focuses on sourcing, transacting, and managing investments through to broader roles with portfolio companies.

Previous experience

Before Rickitt Mitchell, Adam trained at EY in London as a Chartered Accountant, working across the wealth and asset management teams in audit and transaction services. Adam graduated from Loughborough University with a BSc in Accounting and Financial Management.

Lee is part of Mercia’s VCT investment team and is involved in identifying new investment opportunities, completing transactions and supporting Mercia’s portfolio companies.

Previous experience

Lee joined Mercia in 2021 after seven years working in Corporate Finance at PwC: firstly advising public and private sector bodies across the healthcare, telecoms and transport sectors, and then as an Assistant Director advising digital infrastructure and energy businesses on growth equity raises and M&A transactions. He holds a BA in Natural Sciences from the University of Cambridge and a Masters (Distinction) in Research Methods from the University of Manchester.

Joanna joined the Group in 2021 as Fund Administrator, working within the VCT Funds. She supports the Investment Team with deal preparation and completion, the maintenance of records, and the development, coordination and production of both external and internal reports. Joanna is based at the Manchester office.

Previous experience

Joanna has a strong background in office support as well as in sales. Her previous experience being in office and account management in the healthcare sector and retail management and a proven sales record gained in over 30 years working in the travel industry. Joanna is a qualified assessor – Level 3 and has gained extensive customer service experience whilst working in the travel industry. Her experience in customer service led to her most recent position prior to joining Mercia, on the management team working in occupational health developing and supporting a team of administrators and managing the diaries of clinicians.

Formerly CEO of Enterprise Ventures ahead of its acquisition by Mercia. Jonathan has led and managed a substantial portfolio of successful private equity and venture capital investments. A significant proportion of this portfolio lies in the less affluent regions of the UK, where success has been achieved not only through the generation of attractive financial returns, but also through the jobs that have been created in growing SMEs, making a sustainable and long-term contribution to the UK economy.

Previous experience

Jonathan studied Law at Oxford University and has an MA in Jurisprudence. He spent 12 years in practice as a solicitor in the public and private sectors and the last 28 years as a fund manager with Murray Johnstone, Aberdeen Asset Management and Enterprise Ventures. In that time he raised more than £900.0million of private equity and venture capital funds worldwide, from institutional and Government sources, for investment in the UK. Jonathan was a member of the Council of the British Venture Capital Association (BVCA) and chaired the BVCA Legal & Technical Committee. He was chair of the Community Development Finance Association (CDFA, now Responsible Finance) from 2011 to 2015 and is a member of the North West Regional Council for the Confederation of British Industry (CBI).

Joining the Manchester office as Digital Content Manager under the guidance of Head of Marketing and Communications, Alison Dwyer, Lee manages Mercia’s digital and content strategy. Lee is also a member of the Mercia O2 Committee – offering the benefits of diverse opinions, ideas and points of view.

 Previous experience

Lee has vast experience and knowledge in content production and ideation. He began his career as an editor with Manchester’s Channel M TV station, before producing content around the globe for World Rugby; culminating in reporting at the 2011 World Cup in New Zealand. A move to Manchester City Football Club in 2011 saw Lee take on some of the club’s most ambitious and ground-breaking digital campaigns, initiatives and projects to date. A move down the M62 in 2018 to Liverpool Football Club saw his work being industry recognised when the Digital team won the ‘Best in Football Media’ award at the Football Business Awards in 2019.

Melanie joined the Group in 2011 as an Investment Executive providing support to EV SME Loans, the RisingStars Growth Funds, Coalfields Growth and the EV Growth Funds Investment Teams which are able to invest in businesses across the UK and in a variety of sectors. Based in Manchester, she is responsible for supporting portfolio management and as such takes responsibility for coordinating the investment process, monitoring portfolio companies during the Fund’s involvement, and also reporting to Fund investors.

Previous experience

Melanie has a background working within the finance and audit function, with a particular focus on governance and compliance. She has previously supported large Government contracts within the Welfare to Work Sector, ensuring the business operated within the parameters of the contracts it managed.
