Paul joined the Group in 2005 to source investments for the newly created Coalfields Enterprise Fund. Subsequently he spent several years making investments on behalf of the Lancashire-based Rosebud Finance. His current responsibilities centre on the oversight of the varied portfolios of Rosebud and EV SME Loans. Both funds aim to support the ambitions of growing businesses across a wide spread of industry sectors.

Previous experience

After graduating from Nottingham University, Paul worked for Barclays Bank in London, focusing on corporate lending and including several years as a member of the bank’s specialist acquisition finance team. Following a move to the North West, he carried out senior corporate finance roles in Liverpool, Preston and Manchester before joining WME to focus on seeking investment opportunities for the North West Equity Fund.

Peter Rooney joined the Group in 2014. He negotiates new investments on behalf of Lancashire’s Rosebud Finance and EV SME Loans. He is responsible both for sourcing investment opportunities across the region and assessing their suitability from a performance perspective prior to investment. Peter is based in the Preston office, and works with small to medium and start-up companies in and around the Lancashire region.

Previous experience

Prior to joining the Group, Peter has worked with Barclays PLC, and held numerous positions in several disciplines, managing businesses in both the SME and corporate arenas. He has worked with clients in both public and private sectors across a number of different areas including manufacturing, not for profit and professional services.

Sue joined the Group in 2002. As Financial Controller, she is responsible for all the statutory accounting and detailed financial management reporting for the managed funds. She also has responsibility for all the investment accounting and financial information of several managed client funds, including both NPIF – Mercia Debt Finance and NPIF – Mercia Equity Finance. In addition, Sue manages the payroll, pensions, VAT and treasury management functions, as well as supervising the Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable roles for the majority of funds within Mercia. In working closely with the Group’s auditors and advisors, Sue ensures that all the corporate and statutory reporting deadlines are strictly adhered to.

Previous experience

Sue began her accounting career and finance training in private practices, before moving to financial accounting roles predominately within manufacturing sectors of US-owned corporations.

Andy joined the Group in April 2018 as an Investment Manager in the SME Loans Team. He is based at our Preston office and will be supporting growing SMEs across the North West and North Wales. His particular focus will be on debt capital, covering most sectors across the region.

Previous experience

Andy spent over 30 years working at RBS, with the latter two years as business development director of commercial banking covering the Merseyside region. As an experienced banker, Andy understands the challenges that businesses face when it comes to funding. Prior to his business development role, Andy worked in a specialist banking team supporting businesses through the tough economic climate. More recently, Andy was regional manager for RateSetter Business Finance. His role involved developing a quality introducer network and supporting SMEs’ growth plans along with MBOs.

Caroline joined in 2013 as an Assistant Accountant based in the Preston office and has over 10 years’ experience working in a finance department. In this role, Caroline is responsible for completing accounting tasks for all funds. In particular, she manages sales ledger, purchase ledger and nominal ledger reconciliations for Mercia’s managed funds and completes bank transfers for investments from the Mercia EIS Funds. She is responsible for managing the debt funds which include preparing loan repayment schedules, transferring the funds to investees, collecting direct debits and completing nominal reconciliations for NPIF and EV SME Loans.

Caroline is also a member of the Mercia Knowledge Committee.

Previous experience

Caroline joined Mercia from the aerospace manufacturing industry where she was responsible for sales ledger, purchase ledger, processing weekly payroll and completing month end procedures. Caroline is AAT qualified.

Mark is an Investment Director with over 18 years’ venture capital experience, with particular expertise in the life science sector. He has been involved in all aspects of creating venture backed businesses, including sourcing new opportunities, working with founders and management teams to build valuable propositions, through to public market listings and trade sales. He has been a non-executive director of several private and public companies. Mark works across several early-stage venture funds, including the RisingStars Growth Funds, the North West Fund for Venture Capital, Finance Yorkshire Seedcorm Fund, and is actively looking for new life science deals for the Northern Powerhouse Fund.

Previous experience

Mark spent two years as bioscience ventures manager at London-based Imperial Innovations. Prior to joining Imperial, Mark had spent the previous five years with Mercia’s technology team based in the North West, and before that, six years at Merlin Biosciences, a venture capital and advisory company dedicated to the life sciences sector.

As Assistant Accountant, Ella joined the Group in 2017 to support the tasks of the finance function based at the Preston office in Lancashire. Ella became AAT qualified in January 2020.

Ella completes accountancy tasks across various funds and entities such as sales and purchases ledger, cash transfers for investments, expense reconciliations, accruals and prepayments and cash control. Ella completes the monthly management accounts for EV Business Loans Ltd and is also involved in preparing quarterly finance schedules for EV Growth II, EV SME Loans, MEIF Proof of Concept, NE Venture Fund, NPIF Debt and NPIF Equity.

Previous experience

Ella worked as assistant accountant in the legal sector for a conveyancing business with three years’ experience of working in finance. Prior to working in finance, Ella worked as administration manager for a refrigeration business in Cumbria.

Hannah joined the Finance Team in June 2018 as Accounts Assistant, and is based at the Preston office. She is responsible for the sales ledger, credit control, invoices, and purchase ledger tasks. Hannah is also involved in the maintenance of cash books and credit card reconciliations, imputing of monthly journals and assisting with month end reports.

Previous experience

Previous to joining Mercia, Hannah worked for a legal cashiering firm where she was responsible for daily bank reconciliations, setting up payments, running month end, and documenting the movement of client monies on different systems.

John joined the Group as Finance Director in 2006 and has over 30 years’ experience in managing all aspects of private equity as an investor, portfolio director and in fundraising. He is responsible for all of the financial aspects of the business and a member of the Fund Investment Committees.

Previous experience

A Chartered Accountant, John spent eleven years with Murray Johnstone Private Equity, followed by four years with Aberdeen Murray Johnstone Private Equity as portfolio director and a member of the executive management team. John has held a number of non-executive director appointments on behalf of institutional investors and client funds and has advised private equity investors and fund investors, in the private and public sectors, in the UK and overseas, on due diligence and investment management. He is a former member of the British Venture Capital Association Hi-tech Committee and the VCT Fund Managers’ Forum.
