Paul joined the Group in 2017 as an Investment Manager in the NPIF – Mercia Debt Team, and has over 30 years’ experience in banking and asset finance. He is focused on supporting small and medium-sized businesses to achieve their growth ambitions and fulfil their potential. He mainly covers the Humber area and Sheffield City region.

Previous experience

Paul joined NatWest from school, and whilst always living in East Yorkshire he has enjoyed a varied career working with a diverse range of businesses of all sizes across the North of England and Scotland. For several years, he led a team of banking experts who were successful in supporting businesses through the tough economic environment and so understands the challenges faced by SMEs on a daily basis. Paul holds the Chartered Banker Diploma in lending skills.

Paul joined the Group in 2005 to source investments for the newly created Coalfields Enterprise Fund. Subsequently he spent several years making investments on behalf of the Lancashire-based Rosebud Finance. His current responsibilities centre on the oversight of the varied portfolios of Rosebud and EV SME Loans. Both funds aim to support the ambitions of growing businesses across a wide spread of industry sectors.

Previous experience

After graduating from Nottingham University, Paul worked for Barclays Bank in London, focusing on corporate lending and including several years as a member of the bank’s specialist acquisition finance team. Following a move to the North West, he carried out senior corporate finance roles in Liverpool, Preston and Manchester before joining WME to focus on seeking investment opportunities for the North West Equity Fund.

Paul joined the Group in 2006 with more than 30 years’ experience in lending. He is the Managing Director, Mercia Debt Funds and heads up Mercia’s lending activity. Paul was heavily involved in the launch of EV SME Loans and is also Fund Manager for NPIF in Yorkshire and Humber.

Previous experience

Previously Paul was a regional director with Barclays Ventures and responsible for the north of England and the Midlands. He has made numerous equity investments in MBOs and development capital transactions in various sectors, including specialist manufacturing, support services and distribution. Paul also sat on the boards of many of these businesses and he continues to do this as part of his role within Mercia too. The earlier part of Paul’s career was spent in corporate banking, in the UK and overseas.

Pete joined the Group in 2017 and has over 30 years’ lending experience. He is Investment Director for NPIF – Mercia Debt Finance, focusing on delivering the Fund into Sheffield City region.

Previous experience

Prior to joining the Group, Pete was with RBS where his final role was director for Commercial Banking in South Yorkshire and North Derbyshire, running the bank’s relationship management team across that area. Experienced in lending to the SME sector, he spent six months seconded to the bank’s lending programme project in 2013, in response to the challenge of increasing its performance in this area. Prior to that he held the role of relationship director in commercial banking, working directly with the SME sector in the same area. Pete has worked with the SME community in and around the region since 1996.

Peter Rooney joined the Group in 2014. He negotiates new investments on behalf of Lancashire’s Rosebud Finance and EV SME Loans. He is responsible both for sourcing investment opportunities across the region and assessing their suitability from a performance perspective prior to investment. Peter is based in the Preston office, and works with small to medium and start-up companies in and around the Lancashire region.

Previous experience

Prior to joining the Group, Peter has worked with Barclays PLC, and held numerous positions in several disciplines, managing businesses in both the SME and corporate arenas. He has worked with clients in both public and private sectors across a number of different areas including manufacturing, not for profit and professional services.

Val joined Finance South Yorkshire (now part of the Group) in 2010 as an Investment Administrator within the business loans team based in Yorkshire. She has over 10 years’ experience in fund administration. Val is responsible for administering the day-to-day workload pertaining to pre and post-investment activity, gathering of economic outputs to collate into monthly and quarterly reports, and the diary management and coordination of communication within the NPIF – Mercia Debt Team, which covers Yorkshire and the Humber.

Previous experience

Val spent three years working for YFM Group on its Partnership Investment Finance campaign, where she was responsible for all administrative and PA support and production of analytical reports, as well as managing a small office and subsequent close down procedures of the satellite office at the end of the fund. Her previous background was mainly in line management and administrative support for the retail sector, where training and development was a large part of the role.

Jonathan joined Finance South Yorkshire (now part of the Group) in 2010 as an Investment Manager within the business loans team based in Yorkshire, and has over 30 years’ experience in lending. He now has the role of Senior Investment Manager mainly focused on West and North Yorkshire for NPIF – Mercia Debt Finance.

Previous experience

He previously spent four years at YFM Group working on the Partnership Investment Finance Loan Fund in a similar role. His earlier roles have included investment manager with Brown Shipley, a London-based Merchant Bank providing lending solutions to high net worth clients, and also Leeds Building Society dealing with commercial property investment. Prior to those roles he spent 14 years with NatWest Bank plc where he was a relationship manager.

Melanie joined Finance South Yorkshire (now part of the Group) in 2006 and is part of the Finance Yorkshire Portfolio Team. She is a Portfolio Executive with responsibility for monitoring the performance and realisation of the business loans on the Finance Yorkshire fund mainly covering the South Yorkshire area. Melanie is also working with the NPIF – Mercia Debt Team to introduce referrals from her portfolio and other sources. She will ultimately be responsible for the monitoring and realisation of the investments made through this fund.

Previous experience

Melanie previously worked for UK Steel Enterprise for four years as an investment administrator on the South Yorkshire Investment Fund Small Business Fund. Here she put in place all the processes to help the smooth running of the fund management role. She also has experience in retail, corporate pensions, project management and purchase ledger roles.

Alissia joined the Group in April 2019 as an Investment Associate working within the Northern Powerhouse Investment Fund – Debt Finance Team, focused on investing in businesses located throughout Yorkshire and Humber in addition to providing deal origination support.

Previous experience

Alissia has over 10 years’ experience in banking, previously working at Shawbrook Bank within the new business team across a variety of sectors, and Yorkshire Bank in business lending and broker mortgages. She holds the Chartered Bankers qualification and a BA (Hons) degree in Business Administration & Management.

Andy joined the Group in April 2018 as an Investment Manager in the SME Loans Team. He is based at our Preston office and will be supporting growing SMEs across the North West and North Wales. His particular focus will be on debt capital, covering most sectors across the region.

Previous experience

Andy spent over 30 years working at RBS, with the latter two years as business development director of commercial banking covering the Merseyside region. As an experienced banker, Andy understands the challenges that businesses face when it comes to funding. Prior to his business development role, Andy worked in a specialist banking team supporting businesses through the tough economic climate. More recently, Andy was regional manager for RateSetter Business Finance. His role involved developing a quality introducer network and supporting SMEs’ growth plans along with MBOs.
