About

Simon joined the Group in 2017 and is a member of the NPIF – Mercia Equity Team. He is focused on identifying and delivering investments from NPIF Equity and is the primary contact in the Teesside and Humberside regions. He supports a growing number of investments in these areas.

Previous experience

Simon is from the materials and petrochemical industry, having held positions in Johnson Matthey and Davy Process Technology. This has included team management and leadership roles in research and development, technology licensing and technology consulting, which led to a number of patented commercialised processes for catalyst recovery, natural product conversion and bulk petrochemical manufacture; more recently operations, manufacturing excellence, and strategy development. Simon has a science and technology background with a degree and PhD in Chemistry from the University of Durham.

About

Thea joined the Group in 2018 and is an Investment Associate for the North East Venture Fund (NEVF). Thea’s role includes sourcing and executing early stage deals across Durham, Northumberland and Tyne and Wear, in addition to providing research and portfolio management support.

Thea is a member of the Mercia Responsible Investment Committee – a group-wide team committed to delivering the ESG strategy across the business and she is also a member of the Mercia Spirit Committee, a group-wide programme translating our values into worthy initiatives.

Previous experience

Prior to joining Mercia, Thea worked in risk and investment operations for BMO Global Asset Management. She holds a BA (Hons) degree in History from Durham University.

Aaron joined NVM in 2017, following nine years in Corporate Banking with Barclays and NatWest. Much of his time was spent supporting the needs of Corporate Banking customers across the North of England where he built a specialty Technology, Media & Telecoms portfolio.  Following this, Aaron was the lead for Barclays Venture Debt proposition in the North East, working with a series of fast-growth and private equity backed businesses. During his time in banking, Aaron won the award for Corporate Banker of the Year three times. Prior to banking, Aaron had a successful career with HM Foreign Office and HM Revenue & Customs. Aaron joined Mercia in December 2019 when NVM’s VCTs contracts were acquired by Mercia.

 

Alex joined NVM in 2019 and is responsible for identifying investment opportunities in the North West. He works with team in sourcing, transacting and managing investments across all sectors and regions. He joined from the corporate finance team of Rickitt Mitchell, and before that, spent five years in the assurance and business recovery services team at PWC. He has a first-class degree in economics from Nottingham. Alex joined Mercia in December 2019 when NVM’s VCTs contracts were acquired by Mercia.

Alex is also a member of the Mercia O2 Committee – offering the benefits of diverse opinions, ideas and points of view.

Ian joined the Group in 2017 and is Fund Principal for the North East Venture Fund. He is focused on early-stage and technology investments and covers Durham, Northumberland and Tyne and Wear.

Previous experience

Ian is a Chartered Accountant (FCA) and holds the Investment Management Certificate (IMC) from the CFA. He is a seasoned investment professional having fulfilled both M&A advisory positions in practice and investment management roles in early-stage funds since 2006; he has taken a number of software companies from first investment to exit in recent years. Ian also assists with the delivery of the Venture Capital and Investment modules at Alliance Manchester Business School.

Previous experience

James is an Economics graduate from Newcastle University who qualified as a chartered accountant with EY in Newcastle, working in their audit team and helping to establish their national analytics team. He has also gained industry experience with Procter & Gamble. Over the last seven years, James has worked in corporate finance advising a range of owner-managed businesses on raising early-stage venture capital, private equity investment, acquisitions and disposals throughout the UK.

Previous experience

Jan is a Chartered Accountant (CA) qualifying with EY Bristol before moving to PwC Newcastle and working in their audit and advisory teams. He has a range of experience from working with owner-managed businesses, equity-backed and large listed businesses across the North, UK and internationally.
