Biography

Julian joined Mercia through the 2016 acquisition of Enterprise Ventures, which he joined in 2004 and was head of technology investments at the time of its acquisition. He has over 20 years of venture capital experience, including the successful listings of companies such as Blue Prism Group plc and OptiBiotix Health plc. Through the subsequent sell down of its holding in Blue Prism, Mercia’s RisingStars Growth Fund realised c£95m, 105x the cost of its investment. Julian leads the equity investment team as well as managing the pipeline of Mercia’s direct investments.

Alongside his wide experience of investing across many sectors, Julian is fund manager for the Northern Powerhouse Investment Fund (“NPIF”), the RisingStars Growth Funds and the Finance Yorkshire Seedcorn Fund. Julian played a leading role in securing the managed funds contracts awarded by the British Business Bank and North East Fund Ltd and has been Mercia’s Chief Investment Officer since April 2018. Julian has a geology with chemistry degree from the University of Southampton and qualified as a chartered accountant with accountants Smith & Williamson.

Matthew joined the EV Growth Funds Investment Team in 2018 and is responsible for originating and transacting new investments and advising portfolio companies. He is based in the Manchester office and invests into high-growth SMEs across the UK in a range of sectors.

Previous experience

Before joining the Group, Matthew spent the last seven years as an assistant director at BDO in the transaction services team based in Manchester, focused on providing due diligence services to mid-market private equity firms, across a range of sectors. Matthew is a Chartered Accountant and holds an Economics degree from the University of Sheffield.

Melanie joined the Group in 2011 as an Investment Executive providing support to EV SME Loans, the RisingStars Growth Funds, Coalfields Growth and the EV Growth Funds Investment Teams which are able to invest in businesses across the UK and in a variety of sectors. Based in Manchester, she is responsible for supporting portfolio management and as such takes responsibility for coordinating the investment process, monitoring portfolio companies during the Fund’s involvement, and also reporting to Fund investors.

Previous experience

Melanie has a background working within the finance and audit function, with a particular focus on governance and compliance. She has previously supported large Government contracts within the Welfare to Work Sector, ensuring the business operated within the parameters of the contracts it managed.

Paul joined the Group in 2005 to source investments for the newly created Coalfields Enterprise Fund. Subsequently he spent several years making investments on behalf of the Lancashire-based Rosebud Finance. His current responsibilities centre on the oversight of the varied portfolios of Rosebud and EV SME Loans. Both funds aim to support the ambitions of growing businesses across a wide spread of industry sectors.

Previous experience

After graduating from Nottingham University, Paul worked for Barclays Bank in London, focusing on corporate lending and including several years as a member of the bank’s specialist acquisition finance team. Following a move to the North West, he carried out senior corporate finance roles in Liverpool, Preston and Manchester before joining WME to focus on seeking investment opportunities for the North West Equity Fund.

Peter Rooney joined the Group in 2014. He negotiates new investments on behalf of Lancashire’s Rosebud Finance and EV SME Loans. He is responsible both for sourcing investment opportunities across the region and assessing their suitability from a performance perspective prior to investment. Peter is based in the Preston office, and works with small to medium and start-up companies in and around the Lancashire region.

Previous experience

Prior to joining the Group, Peter has worked with Barclays PLC, and held numerous positions in several disciplines, managing businesses in both the SME and corporate arenas. He has worked with clients in both public and private sectors across a number of different areas including manufacturing, not for profit and professional services.

Wayne joined Mercia in 2006 and is the Managing Director of Mercia PE Funds where he is responsible for originating and investing into high-growth SMEs across the UK. He also manages a portfolio of companies from the PE Funds spanning sectors from manufacturing to online retail.

Previous experience

Previously, Wayne was an investment director with Aberdeen Asset Managers Private Equity, investing in a broad range of sectors across the north of England. Prior to that, he was in the corporate finance teams at both Ernst & Young and BDO where he advised companies, management teams and investors on a wide range of mid-market transactions. A Chartered Accountant, Wayne has spent the last 20 years of his career advising and investing into SMEs and larger corporates.

Andy joined the Group in April 2018 as an Investment Manager in the SME Loans Team. He is based at our Preston office and will be supporting growing SMEs across the North West and North Wales. His particular focus will be on debt capital, covering most sectors across the region.

Previous experience

Andy spent over 30 years working at RBS, with the latter two years as business development director of commercial banking covering the Merseyside region. As an experienced banker, Andy understands the challenges that businesses face when it comes to funding. Prior to his business development role, Andy worked in a specialist banking team supporting businesses through the tough economic climate. More recently, Andy was regional manager for RateSetter Business Finance. His role involved developing a quality introducer network and supporting SMEs’ growth plans along with MBOs.

Carmine joined NVM in 2018 and is responsible for identifying investment opportunities in the North West and Wales, progressing NVM’s investments from origination, and supporting portfolio companies as they grow. Prior to this, he was at the Development Bank of Wales’ technology venture team where he invested in early-stage businesses. He has a First-class BSc honours degree in Pharmacology with Industrial Experience and a PhD in Cardiovascular Medicine from the University of Manchester. Carmine joined Mercia in December 2019 when NVM’s VCTs contracts were acquired by Mercia.

About

Chris joined the Group in 2015 as Investment Director for EV SME Loans and has responsibility for sourcing, structuring and negotiating new investment opportunities. He is an experienced banker with over 30 years’ experience in the profession. EV SME Loans has no geographic or sector restrictions and can invest from £150,000 to £1.0million. Funding can be made available for most purposes, with the focus to date being mainly on helping to fund growth and change of ownership situations. Chris is happy to consider opportunities that need funding alongside existing or new lenders or situations where the Fund is the only lender.

Previous experience

Chris has worked for a number of the high street banks and more recently a fund management business. Over the years he has funded a range of different businesses from SMEs to PLCs, dealing with a variety of sectors and transactions.

Mark is an Investment Director with over 18 years’ venture capital experience, with particular expertise in the life science sector. He has been involved in all aspects of creating venture backed businesses, including sourcing new opportunities, working with founders and management teams to build valuable propositions, through to public market listings and trade sales. He has been a non-executive director of several private and public companies. Mark works across several early-stage venture funds, including the RisingStars Growth Funds, the North West Fund for Venture Capital, Finance Yorkshire Seedcorm Fund, and is actively looking for new life science deals for the Northern Powerhouse Fund.

Previous experience

Mark spent two years as bioscience ventures manager at London-based Imperial Innovations. Prior to joining Imperial, Mark had spent the previous five years with Mercia’s technology team based in the North West, and before that, six years at Merlin Biosciences, a venture capital and advisory company dedicated to the life sciences sector.
