We seek an outstanding individual, with a proven track record of operational delivery and management along with strong leadership skills, as Mercia continues on its ambitious growth trajectory. You will help us improve efficiency, grow profitably and remain secure, as a people-centric service provider.

Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, you will be a member of the executive team, currently comprising of Chief Executive Officer, Chief Financial Officer and Chief Investment Officer.

You will work with the executive team on the implementation of Mercia’s growth strategy – focussed on efficient, scalable systems across all parts of the organisation and ensure we maintain our vision of being the first choice for investees, investors and employees. In addition, you will share responsibility for achievement of the broader company KPIs, set annually by the Board.

This role touches many different parts of our business. You will lead a team of high-performing professionals, providing support and guidance to your leadership team direct reports which, dependent on the successful candidate, could include Head of People, Talent & Workspaces, Head of Marketing & Communications, Head of Information Systems and a dotted reporting line for our Head of ESG.

This is a full-time position, based in our Henley-in-Arden office and you will be expected to travel to all Mercia offices regularly. We operate a Flex+ policy which allows for a maximum of 2 home working days each week.


Day to Day Responsibilities, include (but not limited to):

  • Translating our strategy into actionable plans.
  • Embracing our culture/ways of working and being a true champion of continuous improvement.
  • Driving and optimising operational efficiency and inter-operability, performance, profitability and processes across the Group, to include People, Facilities, IT/Telecoms/Systems, Health & Safety, Business Continuity, Group Insurances and ESG.
  • Managing company-wide process/continuous improvement projects and initiatives, ensuring that all operations are carried out in an appropriate and cost-effective way.
  • Analysing internal operations and identifying areas for process enhancement. Driving internal initiatives such as our O2 (Opportunities & Obstacles) Group.
  • Ensuring supplier contractual commitments and KPI’s are met and in line with agreed SLA’s and budget planning/tracking. Overseeing the management of supplier contracts, including the sourcing of new providers for operational processes and other requirements across the Group.
  • Identifying efficiencies and systems, using effective benchmarking comparisons if appropriate to drive operational performance.
  • Working with the Head of Information Systems to ensure our IT systems are fit for purpose.
  • Working with our Head of ESG to ensure that we are considering our environmental impacts /potential /reduction targets as a Group.
  • Working with our Head of Compliance & Risk, ensuring business continuity plans are in place and being responsible for the incident management process.
  • Managing multiple office locations and negotiating with landlords through the lifecycle of all operational leasing agreements.
  • Overseeing future refurbishment projects, liaising with landlords where necessary.
  • Managing the annual insurance renewals for the Group.
  • Oversight of company policies, ensuring the People, Talent & Workspaces team are keeping policies up-to-date and in line with latest changes in functional areas.
  • Overseeing good data management across the company, including GDPR compliant processes.
  • Statutory and regulatory knowledge of Health & Safety in an office/professional setting.

What you’ll need:

  • Previous experience as a Chief Operating Officer in a growing organisation (greater than 50 employees, ideally less than 200), or three or more years of experience in executive leadership roles business planning / setting and delivering strategy successfully.
  • Able to demonstrate group-wide operational management and transformation.
  • Experience of working in a regulated environment, understanding the potential consequences of non-compliance with legislative, statutory and regulatory requirements.
  • A natural communicator and team player.
  • Genuinely open, collaborative and can engage to build cohesive relationships.
  • Bringing an external context to Mercia’s operation, culture, values and operation would be welcome.
  • Evidence of solid academic achievement.
  • Given the regular travel to our other UK offices, unrestricted mobility is a requirement, with a current / valid driving licence enabling you to drive in the UK.
  • You should have the full right to work in the UK.
