Carmine joined NVM in 2018 and is responsible for identifying investment opportunities in the North West and Wales, progressing NVM’s investments from origination, and supporting portfolio companies as they grow. Prior to this, he was at the Development Bank of Wales’ technology venture team where he invested in early-stage businesses. He has a First-class BSc honours degree in Pharmacology with Industrial Experience and a PhD in Cardiovascular Medicine from the University of Manchester. Carmine joined Mercia in December 2019 when NVM’s VCTs contracts were acquired by Mercia.

Chris joined the Group in 2015 as Investment Director for EV SME Loans and has responsibility for sourcing, structuring and negotiating new investment opportunities. He is an experienced banker with over 30 years’ experience in the profession. EV SME Loans has no geographic or sector restrictions and can invest from £150,000 to £1.0million. Funding can be made available for most purposes, with the focus to date being mainly on helping to fund growth and change of ownership situations. Chris is happy to consider opportunities that need funding alongside existing or new lenders or situations where the Fund is the only lender.

Previous experience

Chris has worked for a number of the high street banks and more recently a fund management business. Over the years he has funded a range of different businesses from SMEs to PLCs, dealing with a variety of sectors and transactions.

Dawn joined the Group in 2017 and has over 16 years’ experience working as a corporate finance advisor to growing businesses. She is a dedicated Portfolio Manager for the North West Fund for Venture Capital and the North West Fund for Mezzanine, which have supported entrepreneurs building high-growth businesses in the North West region by providing debt and equity solutions for new and early-stage start-up companies.

Dawn is also a member of the Mercia O2 Committee – offering the benefits of diverse opinions, ideas and points of view.

Previous experience

Dawn is a Chartered Accountant. She trained at Andersen, worked for 10 years as part of Ernst & Young’s corporate restructuring team in London and Manchester, and spent four years locally with Begbies Traynor. She has assisted a wide variety of businesses, restructuring debt and equity to complement growth plans, creating robust financial and cash flow forecasts, and in managing stakeholder interests.

Mark is an Investment Director with over 18 years’ venture capital experience, with particular expertise in the life science sector. He has been involved in all aspects of creating venture backed businesses, including sourcing new opportunities, working with founders and management teams to build valuable propositions, through to public market listings and trade sales. He has been a non-executive director of several private and public companies. Mark  has worked across several early-stage venture funds, including the RisingStars Growth Funds, the North West Fund for Venture Capital, Finance Yorkshire Seedcorm Fund, and is actively looking for new life science deals for the Northern Powerhouse Fund. He has been heavily involved in the following investments; Concepta plc, Evgen and Abingdon Healthcare.

Mark is a member of the Mercia Responsible Investment Committee – a Group-wide team committed to delivering the ESG strategy across the business.

Previous experience

Mark spent two years as bioscience ventures manager at London-based Imperial Innovations. Prior to joining Imperial, Mark had spent the previous five years with Mercia’s technology team based in the North West, and before that, six years at Merlin Biosciences, a venture capital and advisory company dedicated to the life sciences sector.

Georgina joined the Group in 2019 to provide office management support and general day-to-day administrative duties. Georgina assists in the smooth running of the Manchester office and is responsible for logging applications submitted through our website.

Previous experience

Georgina has a strong background in human resources having worked in both recruitment and employee relations for the past seven years. Prior to joining Mercia, Georgina was working for the NHS recruiting frontline staff.

Hannah is part of the marketing team, having joined the Group in 2017. She is responsible for event coordination and design, as well as marketing and social media. Her role involves coordinating events that are either hosted by Mercia or attended by a team member and creating graphics and design used across the group. Hannah is based in the Manchester office.

Hannah is also a member of the Mercia Spirit Committee, a group-wide programme translating our values into worthy initiatives.

Previous experience

After graduating from De Montfort University with a degree in Psychology and Media Studies, Hannah lived abroad for seven years, spending the majority of that time in Beijing, where she worked as an editor and curriculum designer. She also set up her own events company that worked with venues in Beijing and Tianjin. Hannah relocated back to the UK in 2015, and worked at The Manchester College for a year as an editor.

Hasan joined the Group in 2019 as a Data Scientist, helping to streamline data work flow and improve data-driven business decisions. He undertakes the development of automation scripts, machine learning algorithms and data pre-processing/mining tasks. Additionally, he supports the CIO and Senior Leadership Team with management information reports as well as client reports for British Business Bank (BBB), and provides training and support to colleagues.

Hasan is also a member of the Mercia Knowledge Committee.

Previous experience

He previously worked in the chemicals industry as a junior chemist, involved in manufacturing and analysing e-liquids. He also worked as a team leader/sales agent in a national commercial estates agency. He holds a BSc in Chemistry from Manchester Metropolitan University, and is working towards an MSc in Data Science from Manchester Metropolitan University.

Jill joined the private equity investment team in 2018, and is responsible for originating and transacting new investments and managing portfolio companies. She is based in the Manchester office, and invests into high-growth SMEs across the UK in a range of sectors.

Jill lead’s Mercia Responsible Investment Committee – a Group-wide team committed to delivering the ESG strategy across the business.

Previous experience

Before joining the Group, Jill was an investment director at RJD Partners based in London, investing in businesses across the UK mid- and lower-mid market. Jill has over 10 years of private equity investment experience within several sectors including business services, leisure and travel, education, and IT services. Jill has also worked with the Wheatsheaf Group, a long-term investor in food and agriculture businesses. Before joining RJD, Jill spent several years in the corporate finance and corporate tax teams at PwC, and is a chartered accountant. Originally from the North West, Jill has an MA in French and Philosophy from Oxford University.
