RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Investment Director will be responsible for:

  • Playing a key role in providing industry insights and managing the performance of the Fund, representing the Growth Fund to investors and investees and delivering the anticipated returns.
  • Engaging with senior/influential stakeholders for current and future success, developing a strong reputation and profile in the market.
  • Growing and managing a network of top tier contacts /deal sources and building a pipeline of high quality potential investments for the Fund (and sometimes more widely across the group).
  • Evaluating the potential investment returns, formulating a value creation plan and assessing exit scenarios.
  • Structuring deals, legal negotiation and executing transactions, preparing investment agreements (terms sheet).
  • Carrying out and recording full due diligence analysis on an investee company, involving all relevant stakeholders, raising risks and their potential consequences.
  • Developing a portfolio of own direct investments and managing any conflicts which may arise.
  • Representing the Fund on an investee company board and working on the delivery of the 100 day plan in collaboration with an investee company.
  • Monitoring the current and future performance of all investments made.
  • Identifying, building and evaluating effective board and management teams in portfolio companies.
  • Working with portfolio company management teams to prepare investment pitches and growth plans to attract quality syndicate partners and successfully negotiating with syndicate investors to ensure alignment and fund investor interests.
  • Developing exit plans in a way that optimises the best returns and agrees the timetable and route to be taken.
  • Demonstrating a track record of creating value through exits, NAV growth and moving assets to the balance sheet.
  • Managing company closure where portfolio companies may fail.
  • Preparing financial and performance-related documentation for quarterly reports and all other stakeholder requirements.
  • Agreeing resourcing plans to meet current the future needs to deliver the Fund’s strategy.
  • Providing inspirational leadership which empowers and motivates the team.
  • Working with peers and the Mercia SLT to ensure consistency in leadership and communication across the business.
  • Supporting the further development of Mercia outside of the current role.

EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Track record of making early stage technology investments (likely to be more than 5-7 years).
  • Solid knowledge and experience of the UK venture landscape.
  • Well networked in early stage investments with advisers, deal introducers, HNWIs and NXDs in the regions.
  • Experience of working with Boards of investee companies.
  • Evidence of managing multiple investment projects to tight deadlines.
  • Developed presentation and public speaking capability which positively reflects Mercia and gives personal credibility.
  • Strong business acumen and analytical skills.
  • Strong work and team ethics.
  • Ambitious and self-motivated and leads by example.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience of financial analysis and modelling.
  • Experience of working in a regulated environment, understanding the potential consequences of non-compliance with legislative and statutory and regulatory requirements.
  • Solid Excel skills are essential, as is a working knowledge of other MS Office product
  • Evidence of academic achievement, a relevant degree is strongly preferred.

  • You must be able to drive and be prepared to travel to our other Mercia offices and client sites.
  • May be required to acquire FCA approval as a Senior Manager.
